Tim Lincecum

Tim Lincecum filed for arbitration at a value of $13MM. This came as a big surprise to me, as I expected the best pitcher in baseball 2 years in a row with 2 Cy Young awards would file a little higher as winning multiple awards like that puts Lincecum in “special case” territory. I thought he would go for around $15MM and the club would submit somewhere between $10-12MM. However, the club submitted $8MM and $13MM would still set a new record if Lincecum is awarded his asking price. There is no way the Giants win this hearing if you ask me. Tim was very nice to the Giants and their fans with his asking price, and perhaps points towards his hopes of signing an extension with the Giants. Tim’s FanGraphs value posted him at $37MM in 2008 and $35.4MM in 2009 with a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 8.2 and 7.9 respectively. Tim has the chance in his MLB career, to become a top pitcher of all time at the rate he is going. No other pitcher at his age has accomplished what he has. It will be exciting to see him move forward, and it would be nice to see him hang around in San Francisco as the new face of the franchise now that Bonds is gone (though I’d love to have him at Fenway). Keep in mind when you watch him all, you may be watching one of the greatest to ever do it.
